about

Bachot Muna has spent his life
absorbed in music. With humble music
beginnings to a career as vibrant as
Bachot himself, ‘Mbana Wema’ is the
latest release from this jazz artist.
A talented pianist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, Bachot has embraced his musical abilities
head-on. His upcoming single ‘Mbana Wema’ was inspired by its meaning; to stand up and stay
awake. Over a hypnotic chorus sung by a mesmeric choir-like vocal from Talike Gellé, “wake up,
wake up” is chanted in a meditative state, soothing the soul with its jazz infusions. The song
opens with percussive rhythms, scattered with intricate piano riffs, before Bachot’s voice chimes
through, guided by the calming texture of the gentle chant layered underneath. An expressive
saxophone sits between, adding a soft vibrancy to the song.
Bachot was inspired to write ‘Mbana Wema’ as a way to encourage young Africans to stay at
home and seek out the opportunities they already have. To create a vision of their future and
follow the metaphorical journey, rather than facing the dangers of crossing the Mediterranean sea
to reach Europe. A song from the heart, Bachot delivers his sincerity through a fusion of smooth
jazz and the influence of African nations, to create something unique that leans towards Afro-jazz.
Bachot’s music journey has been spirited and bright to say the least. He found his singing voice
while he was still in school, and set out to pursue a career in music. His first taste of collaboration
was with Man-walk, a band created with some friends. As a self-taught pianist he played the
piano, but with no instrument to practice, he drew a keyboard on paper, memorising melodies
and rehearsing the patterns on the paper. Throughout his career, he learnt how to be a sound
engineer and producer, leading to many opportunities such as his fourth album ‘Africa Sa’ which
saw him win ‘Best Singer’ in Cameroon in 1999. Another highlight was his performance at the
famous Montreal International Jazz Festival, captivating his audience.
Bachot’s future looks bright, creating the soundtrack for the upcoming American movie ‘In
Blackest Night Out’ to be released in June 2021. Despite all his musical celebrations, the most
important part of Bachot Muna’s music is that it comes purely from the soul, influenced by peace,
love and happiness.
